چکیده

A relatively simple model of the resistive wall mode RWM is derived for a large aspect ratio, low , circular cross section, tokamak plasma, surrounded by a concentric, thin, uniform resistive wall. The model employs uniform toroidal plasma rotation, and includes the following realistic edge dissipation mechanisms: dissipation due to charge-exchange with cold neutrals, and dissipation due to neoclassical flow damping. The model is applied to the HBT-EP tokamak T. Ivers, E. Eisner, A. Garofalo et al., Phys. Plasmas 3, 1926 1996 , with the wall parameters determined by fitting to output from the VALEN code J. Bialek, A. H. Boozer, M. E. Mauel, and G. A. Navratil, Phys. Plasmas 8, 217

Study of the Resistive Wall Mode in Cylindrical Geometry

The problem of the resistive wall mode (RWM) is studied in cylindrical geometry and compared to experimental observations from HBT-EP tokamak. In HBT-EP, a dynamical RWM plasma response is studied by applying static, rotating and phase-flip external magnetic perturbations. The plasma response to the applied perturbation is included via the permeability matrix, P = 1/(−s+iα). Here, s is the norm...

Active Feedback Control of the Wall Stabilized External Kink Mode*

Active feedback control has been used in the HBT-EP tokamak to control the growth of the n=1 resistive wall mode. These experiments were carried out using a set of thin stainless-steel wall segments with magnetic diffusion time of ~0.4 ms positioned near the plasma boundary. In plasmas that would normally exhibit a strong ideal n = 1 external kink mode without a nearby conducting wall, the resi...

Active Feedback Control of Kink Modes in Tokamaks: 3D VALEN Modeling and HBT-EP Experiments*

Significant progress in the development of active feedback control as a robust technique for the suppression of the wall stabilized external kink or resistive wall mode (RWM) in tokamaks has been achieved through a combination of modeling and experiments. Results from the application and benchmarking of the 3D feedback modeling code VALEN [1] as the primary analysis and feedback design tool on ...

Modeling of active control of external magnetohydrodynamic instabilities

A general circuit formulation of resistive wall mode ~RWM! feedback stabilization developed by Boozer @Phys. Plasmas 5, 3350 ~1998!# has been used as the basis for the VALEN computer code that calculates the performance of an active control system in arbitrary geometry. The code uses a finite element representation of a thin shell structure in an integral formulation to model arbitrary conducti...
